Comedy of Control: Trading Control for Trust

Pastor Daniel Medders reflects on the human desire for control, using humorous examples from his own life before sharing how knee surgery and the unexpected death of a close friend reminded him how little control people actually have. Drawing from Adam and Eve, Israel’s demand for a king, the rich young ruler, and Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, he shows how the desire to control our future, decisions, possessions, and circumstances can keep us from trusting God. He distinguishes biblical self-control from the attempt to control everything around us and challenges the idea that confidence in our own abilities can replace dependence on God. Pastor Daniel encourages each person to consider what they are still trying to control, including finances, family, possessions, decisions, and future plans, and to instead seek God’s guidance and trust Him with what has been entrusted to them. He closes in prayer, asking God to reveal where people are still “holding the reins” and help them grow in dependence on His direction.
